The Writing Education, Love, and Liberation (WELL) Group is a graduate student collective committed to creating a space that welcomes critical dialogue and reflexivity that evaluates, challenges, and transforms oppressive teaching practices.
We recognize that the current systems of traditional writing education oppress and further marginalize students of color, multilingual writers, and other minoritized groups. We are dedicated to moving beyond equitable practices by pushing toward liberation, thereby empowering marginalized students to thrive within the existing system of knowledge and dismantle structures/systems of power that have ceased to support the majority of the current student population.
We meet bi-weekly every quarter to:
- Build a community where we can look at, understand, and evaluate writing program materials and community statements around social justice topics (e.g. the CCCC’s statements on multilingual writers, Black linguistic justice, citational justice, etc.).
- Be in critical dialogue with each other in an equitable manner that respects diverse viewpoints.
- Strengthen our knowledge of writing research, terminology, and research-based arguments.
- Provide support and solidarity to each other as we navigate the writing studies space.
- Work towards linguistic justice and holistic expression of our and our students’ authentic selves and multiple identities in writing.
- Develop a stronger, more just syllabus/curriculum/teaching practices.
- Provide a reflexive space for graduate students interested in social justice topics to prepare for conferences, qualifying exams, and their dissertation defense.
